Adrenal Stress (Fatigue)
Adrenal Stress (Adrenal Fatigue) has become a very common and serious health condition in today’s society, especially among women. It can affect anyone who has ever experienced persistent or severe emotional/physical stress. Weak adrenal glands can also be hereditary. Adrenal Stress is when your adrenal glands function below normal levels. Adrenal Stress, if untreated, can lead to other health issues such as thyroid problems, endocrine disorders and autoimmune diseases to name a few.
The adrenal glands are two small glands that are situated above the kidneys. The purpose of the adrenals is to assist the body in handling stress. The adrenals affect the functioning of every tissue, organ, and other gland in the body. They also directly affect emotions. The adrenals manufacture and secrete several hormones that influence all the major physiological processes in the body. Some of these processes include;
-The utilization of carbohydrates and fats.
-The conversion of fats and proteins into energy.
-Regulation of blood sugar.
-Proper functioning of the cardiovascular system.
-Proper functioning of the gastrointestinal tract.
-Aid in regulating the immune system to include adapting the body to allergens.
We live in a very stressful, fast-paced society, where most people try to balance many things at once and seldom take the time to relax. Many people do not get an adequate amount of quality sleep, and their bodies become completely exhausted. This condition taxes the adrenals even further, causing the body to become depleted of essential vitamins and minerals. Many people will then reach for caffeine containing beverages and/or sugar products to get them through the day. This “quick-fix” actually causes the adrenals to become even weaker.
Signs and symptoms of stressed adrenals may include some of the following:
-Difficulty waking up and getting out of bed in the morning, often times even after a good night sleep.
-Needing coffee or caffeine containing beverages to keep you going.
-Craving sugar foods, or salty foods.
