Arthritis (Rheumatoid and Osteoarthritis)
Arthritis is characterized by inflammation of the joints. There are over 100 different forms of Arthritis. The two most common types of Arthritis are Rheumatoid and Osteoarthritis. Both types involve inflammation of the joints, swelling, persistent pain, and limited mobility.
Osteoarthritis is known as a Degenerative Joint Disease, it is the most common form of Arthritis. Osteoarthritis is caused by the mechanical wear and tear on the joints, and is generally a slow, progressive disease. Osteoarthritis sufferers generally experience stiffness in the early morning waking hours, or later in the day into the evening, especially after long periods of activity. Stiffness is the primary symptom and swelling rarely occurs. Since Osteoarthritis is caused by a problem local to the joint, there are usually no other related symptoms felt anywhere in the body.
Rheumatoid Arthritis is an Autoimmune Disease, in which the body’s own immune system becomes active against itself, leading in this case to cartilage damage. It is a Symmetric Disease, and thus usually affects the same joints on either side of the body. The symptoms associated with Rheumatoid Arthritis can come on gradually or suddenly, typically over a time period of several weeks to several months. Symptoms include swelling of the joints, and/or a general feeling of stiffness. Systemic symptoms can also be experienced, including nausea, weight loss, or fever.
