Diarrhea can be defined as loose, watery stools. A person with Diarrhea generally will pass stool more than three times a day. It is often accompanied by stomach cramps. Diarrhea is very common and should only last for one to three days. Diarrhea occurs if someone has a virus (such as The Flu), has contracted Bacteria (usually from food or water), has parasites, or has taken certain medications. Diarrhea can also occur if a person has been severely constipated for some time. If diarrhea lasts longer than three days this may indicate there is another health concern such as digestive disorders, irritable bowel disorder, Chron’s Disease, or Celiac Disease. Diarrhea can lead to Dehydration, a dangerous condition that occurs when the body becomes deprived of the adequate fluids necessary to function properly. Children and the elderly are especially at risk to the dangers associated with Dehydration, and therefore should be monitored frequently. The usage of Anti-Diarrheal medication is not advisable, as Diarrhea is the body’s natural cleansing mechanism.
